What Is Targeted Therapy?

A Targeted Therapy is a type of cancer treatment that targets the protein or gene found in cancer cells, which controls how those cells grow, divide and spread.

Side Effects Of Targeted Therapy

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), although Targeted Therapy aims to reduce damage to normal and healthy cells, because “healthy cells can also have some of these proteins, targeted therapy can affect them too, causing side effects.”

While some targeted therapies can damage cells in the heart, lungs, kidneys and thyroid, the following are the most common problems faced during this treatment, as per the ACS:

  • Skin and nail cells
  • Hair follicles
  • Cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system
  • Blood-forming cells in the bone marrow
