Geneva General Hospital welcomes oncologist to medical staff | Health

GENEVA — Geneva General Hospital has welcomed Dr. Ryan Fields to its medical staff.

Dr. Fields is a surgeon and researcher devoted to caring for people with complex cancers. He is chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, surgeon-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital, and associate director for Translational Research at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

Dr. Fields and Brian Riesenberger, PA-C, will be treating soft tissue cancers at Geneva General Hospital.

A fellowship-trained oncology surgeon, Dr. Fields’ clinical practice focuses on surgery for cancers of the pancreas, biliary system, liver (including metastatic tumors), stomach, and soft tissues.

He has extensive experience surgically managing a wide spectrum of skin cancer diagnoses, including melanoma; basal cell carcinoma; squamous cell carcinoma (cutaneous); Merkel cell (cutaneous neuroendocrine) carcinoma; and benign and malignant superficial soft tissue tumors.

His research examines how cancers spread and how to improve diagnosis and treatment. He has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and has been continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for the past 12 years.

“This is a shining example of how the affiliation with the University of Rochester continues to bring more specialized, collective care directly to Geneva and the rest of the Finger Lakes region,” said Dr. Jose Acevedo, MBA, president and CEO of UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health.

Prior to joining UR, he served as chief of Surgical Oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, where he co-led the Melanoma & Cutaneous Oncology Program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center.

Dr. Fields earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, was a resident in General Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, and completed a Surgical Oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

He and his wife, Laura Beth, have two children, Gabriel and Sarah.

Riesenberger received his Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from St. John Fisher College.

Dr. Fields also will be working closely with URMC board-certified dermatologists Drs. Amanda Carpenter, Emily M. Lambert, and Diana Stephens at Geneva General Dermatology.

Patients can schedule an appointment by calling 585-275-1611.
